  • Always use a metal tape measure.
  • We require your measurements in millimetres.
  • Measure width x drop (do not reverse these).
  • Measure every window. There may be slight variation that may affect your window furnishings fitting perfectly.
  • Do not take your measurements from house plans as they will not be accurate.
  • If measuring with a partner, make sure they repeat the measurements out loud as they write them down.
  • Double check all details are correct before ordering.

How to Measure For Face Mount

(for fitting your blind outside the window frame)

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE: Blinds Online will not be held responsible for ill-fitting blinds if a customer orders using 'cloth measurements'.   Blinds ordered in this way, will not fit the window.  We only work with the finished size, which is bracket to bracket, and therefore require the total width measurement of your architrave.

  • Measure the width from the outer edge of the architrave to the opposite edge.
  • Measure the drop from the top of the architrave to where you want the blind to finish.

If you do not have architraves (timber frame) around window

  • Measure the opening and add at least 100mm to allow the cloth to go past the opening. (100mm will give 35mm of cloth each side past the opening)
  • Measure the opening and add at least 100mm to the drop to allow the blind to be mounted above the opening.
    • For shorter drop windows we recommend that you take the blind 100-200mm below the sill.
    • Watch for any obstructions such as desk or bed.

How to Measure For Recess Mount

(for fitting your blind inside the window frame)

IIMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE: Blinds Online will not be held responsible for ill-fitting blinds if a customer orders using 'cloth measurements'.   Blinds ordered in this way, will not fit the window.  We only work with the finished size, which is bracket to bracket, and therefore require the total width measurement of your recess.

  • Measure the width from the inside of the window frame from left side to right side. Making sure to measure at the top of the reveal and not the bottom of the window, as this is where the brackets will be mounted.
  • Measure the drop from the top of the inside recess to the base of the inside sill.

Make sure you have enough depth to mount the blind inside the frame.

60mm will be sufficient for a Single Roller Blind. Less will result in the blind protruding out of the recess. Minimum depth required is 40mm.

130mm is required for a Double Roller blind. Less will result in the blind protruding out of the recess. Minimum depth for blinds is 60mm.

DO NOT make any deductions as our factory will do this to ensure a perfect fit.

  • Our factory will make a deduction of 5mm from your Recess Fit blind.
  • IMPORTANT There will be a gap of approx 15-20mm between the fabric and side of your window on each side. This is to allow for the blind components (brackets, chain drive & pin drive).

For more light control, please consider face-mounting your blinds.

How to Measure For Half Glass or French Doors

  • Measure the width of the glass from left to right.  Add 50-100mm to the width.  This will allow 10-35mm of fabric either side of the window.
  • Measure the drop of the glass from top to bottom.  Add a minimum of 100mm to the drop (50mm top and bottom).

The blind will project approx. 80mm from the door.

IMPORTANT: Please be aware of any protrusions or obstructions (such as a door handle).  You may need to adjust your measurements to cater for these.

Roman Blinds Measurement Diagram

How to Measure For Face Mount

  • Start by measuring the Width from the outer edge of the architrave to the opposite edge.
  • Measure the Drop from the top of the Architrave to the where you want the blind to finish.

For shorter drop windows we recommend that you take the blind 50-100mm below the sill. Watch for any obstructions such as desk or bed.

For full length windows we recommend that you measure to 20mm off the floor. This will give enough clearance and allow the blind to have room to settle over time. For drops over 2410 we recommend 30mm clearance.
  • We recommend that you add 100-150mm to the drop of the blind, so you can mount the blind above the architrave to allow the pack to clear as much glass as possible when raised. This will allow more light into the room and is important when blinds are on doors, to allow for clearance.
  • We recommend that you add 40-100mm each side of the architrave. This will help reduce the gap at the side of the blind, providing better light control and more privacy.

If you do not have architraves (timber frame) around window

  • Measure the opening and add at least 40-100mm to each side. This will help reduce the gap at the side of the blind, providing better light control and more privacy.
  • Measure the opening and add at least 100-150mm to the drop to allow the blind to be mounted above the opening.
    • If the openings is to the floor we recommend that you measure to 20mm off the floor. This will give enough clearance to allow the blind to have room to settle over time.
    • For drops over 2410mm, we recommend 30mm clearance.
    • For shorter drop windows, we recommend that you take the blind 50-100mm below the sill.
    • Watch for any obstructions such as desk or bed.

Curtains Measurement Diagram

Measuring for curtain width & drop

The width is easily measured by providing us with the track size you require. You can take the track past the architraves as much as you like for better light control & clearance of windows when curtains are open.

Handy Hint - Try entering small variations to your widths at our website, as you might find the price reduces due to the amount of drops to the fabric required. So altering your measurement by a few millimetres may show a price reduction.

Curtains look best hung to the floor, alternatively you can hang them to the sill or below the sill for shorter windows.

  • Measure to the floor
  • Measure 100-150mm below the sill (watch out for obstructions such as desk or toy box)
  • Measure to the sill. Our hooks will lift the curtains above the track allowing the curtain to hang neatly just above the floor or sill, eliminating the chance of it dragging.
  • Eyelet & Tab Top Curtains are mounted above the architrave. Add 100mm to measurement A, B, or C to allow for the Tab & Eyelet to clear the glass.

Always measure the drop in 3 places across the window to ensure the window is level. Measure Right, Centre & Left hand side and use the shortest of the 3 measures. This is for Measurement A & C lengths only (floor or sill).

Tab Top Heading Eyelet Heading

Tab Top headings have a 100mm long tab which is included in the curtain drop and are suitable for poles up to 45mm in diameter.

Measure from the top of the pole to the floor, sill or below the sill.

By adding the curtain to your rod, it will automatically lift it off the floor or above your sill. Don't make any deductions.

The eyelet will fit rods up to 30mm in diameter. The inner edge of the eyelet is set down 30mm from the top of the curtain.

Measure from the top of the rod to the floor, sill or below the sill as shown in the diagram above and then add 30mm to your drop.

Pelmets & Valances Measurement Diagram

Points to Know

  • Pelmets & Valances generally go past the architraves either side.
  • You will need to make the width 40mm wider than the product you are covering (20mm each side)
  • The measurement we refer to is always the inside box width (IBM)
  • The projection is the distance the Pelmet or Valance will come out from the wall
  • The Fascia size is the height of the Pelmet face

View the specifications of each individual product at our website for further details on projection, fascia etc. You will also find details of sizes to order to cover specific products, such as curtains, roller blinds and more.

Measuring for Roller Blinds on Multi-panel windows and Sliding & Bi-fold Doors

Sliding Door

Recess Mount (inside the frame)

Most sliding doors do not have enough depth to allow you to mount the blind inside the recess. You will need to have at least 60mm’s, although you can get away with a minimum of 30mm’s, allowing the blind to project forward out of the recess into the room.

Also make sure that the door doesn’t have a lip in the centre of the door, preventing recess mounts. If recessing your roller blinds, we recommend that you front roll the cloth to help clear of the handle when operating.

Measuring

We only recommend one blind when recessing. If you have two blinds, you must make sure the blind beside the door, is not in the down position when opening the door, otherwise it will easily get damaged.

Face Mount (outside the frame)

You have an option of having 1 or 2 blinds.

  • Measure the width from the outside edge of the frame, left to right.
  • If you require 2 blinds, then measure from the outside left architrave edge, to the centre of the mid panel for Blind 1. Repeat from the right side to the centre of the panel for Blind 2. Make sure the two measurements add up to the overall width (A)

Note: Not all panels are even and simply halving the overall width may cause a slight imbalance of the 2 blinds. It is always better to measure each panel, then making sure the 2 add up to the overall width. (B1 + B2 = A)

Measure the drop from the top of the architrave to where you want the blind to finish.

Chain controls will be on the left for the left hand blind and the right for the right hand blind.

3 Panel Door

As you do not want to have a gap between the cloths over the glass, we do not recommend 2 even blinds on 3 panel doors/glass. It is always best to have the cloth gaps, over the timber or aluminium mullions.

Your options are;
3 individual blinds
2 Blinds - 1 Blind over 2 panels and the other over 1 panel
1 Blind if the width does not exceed 3000mm

3 Individual Blinds

A1 - For the left hand blind, measure from the outside edge of the left architrave to the centre of the panel mullion.
A2 - For the central blind, measure from the centre point of the left mullion to the centre point of the right mullion.
A3 - For the right hand blind, measure from the outside edge of the right architrave to the centre of the panel mullion.
B - Measure the overall width from the left hand architrave edge across to the right hand architrave edge.

Make sure all 3 individual measurements add up to the overall width.

Important-Australian Child Safety Law awareness for 3 Panel Sliding Doors

It is against Australian child safety laws to allow an unsecured chain on a blind. All blinds must have a child safety device fitted and secured in place to prevent the risk of child strangulation. If the door is in the middle of a 3 panel window, this may prevent the child safety device from being secured on the middle bind. There are only two options that you can take here;

  1. The central blind must have a shorter chain no longer than 1.6m from the floor. You can request this in the comments field at the checkout of our website. Please let us know the length required.
  2. The central blind must be ordered with a multi-link, connecting the operation to one of the outer blinds. Our website has the option of adding a multi-link in the Design and Order section. A multi-link allows the middle blind to operate in unison with the adjoining blind.
  3. Failure to request one of the above 2 options will leave your blinds at risk of causing child strangulation and breaking the Child Safety Laws. Blindsonline cannot be held accountable for your failure to secure the blinds as requested.

2 Individual Blinds

Decide which side the 2 panel and 1 panel blind is best suited. Follow the same measuring procedure as listed above.

1 Individual Blind

Simply take the overall width x drop. It is recommend that a single blind does not exceed 3000mm width. Keep in mind the traffic going through the door and the operation of a single large heavy blind.

Bi-Fold Doors

  • The amount of panels will determine the combination of blinds.
  • Do not split the blinds over the middle of a glass panel, always divide over the timber or aluminium mullion
  • Make sure the chains have a position to secure the child safety device. Due to the operation of the doors, 2 Blinds are ideally suited.
  • Make sure measurement A & B add up to the overall width of the bi-fold doors

Bi-fold Doors Recess Mount

There is often not enough depth for mounting the blinds inside the recess and face mounts are generally the method recommended. However if you do have a deep recess and you would prefer to mount your blinds this way, simply follow the same principals above for dividing the binds in the centre of the door frames to the combination you prefer.

Measurements are taken from inside the frame as shown above

Measuring for Corner Windows

At a Glance

  • We require your measurements in millimetres
  • Write the width x drop
  • Make sure to take the deduction off the butt blind, to allow for the distance of the through blind.

When mounting your blinds into a corner window, one blind will run through and one blind will butt into the other blind, as shown in the diagram below.

First you must decide which blind will be the one to run through. We generally recommend that the blind running through is the one that is facing the front of the house or where you want to achieve the most privacy, to stop vision down the gap between the butting blind.

Important - When ordering your blinds the measurement must have the projection depth subtracted from the butt blind to obtain the proper ordering width. You will be ordering the finished blind size. This distance to be subtracted will depend on the type of product.

See chart below:

Important:
Make sure you have enough depth to mount the shutter inside the frame, to allow the louvres to rotate to the open position, you will require a minimum clearance of 52mm. Look out for any obstructions, such as window-winders or frame protrusions.

Recess Mount - using Z Frame - We recommend this type of mount if you have enough depth in the recess.

  • The frame type used for mounting the shutter inside the window frame is a Z Frame.  We use this type of frame to give you the best light coverage around the frame, eliminating the need for installing light stops.  It is also an easy frame to use for DIY measures/installs, as it has a tolerance for any measurements that are slightly out by a few millimetres or a frame that is out of square.
  • The Z Frame allows the shutter to be easily mounted inside the recess, with sufficient room for 89mm slats to rotate.  Minimum depth required for an 89mm shutter slat is 52mm.  Look out for any obstructions such as window-winders or frame protrusion.
  • The Z Frame is mounted directly to the inside of the window frame, with a 22mm bullnose lip going around the outside of the window frame or plaster.

How to Measure for Face Mount with an Architrave - L Frame

(For fitting your shutter to the timber architrave)

         A.     Measure the width in three places, Top, Centre and Bottom. Measure from the outer edge of the architrave to the opposite edge.  Use the smallest of the three measurements.

        B.       Measure the drop in three places, Left, Centre and Right.   Measure from the top of the architrave, to the bottom of the architrave.  Use the smallest of the three measurements.

Important:
If you have a sill at the base of the window, measure to the top of the sill.  Your shutter will then be provided with a 3-sided frame to sit flush onto the top of the sill.

Provide your exact window measurements.  Do not make any deductions.

How to Measure for Face Mount without an Architrave - L Frame

(For fitting your shutter onto the plaster wall - square set plaster window)

A.     Measure the width in three places, Top, Centre and Bottom.

Measure from the left hand opening edge of the plaster to the opposite edge.

Use the smallest of the three measurements.

Add 84mm total to the width measurement.
This allows the frame to go past the opening 42mm each side (make sure you
have clearance).

B.     Measure the drop in three places, Left, Centre and Right.
Measure from the top of the opening edge of the plaster, to the bottom opening          edge.
Use the smallest of the three measurements.
If you require a four sided frame - Add 84mm to the total drop measurement.
This allows the frame to go above and below 42mm.

Important:
If you have a sill at the base of the window, measure to the top of the sill.  Your shutter will then be provided with a 3 sided frame to sit flush onto the top of the sill.  Add 42mm to the drop measurement, to allow for the frame at the top of the shutter only.

Provide your exact window measurements with required listed additions.  Do not make any deductions.

Face Mount on Architrave - using L Frame
Face Mount on to Plaster - using L Frame

We recommend this type of mount when there is not enough depth for a recess mount with a Z Frame

  • The frame type used for mounting the shutter is an 'L Frame' - 67mm x 42mm
  • The L Frame allows the shutter to be easily mounted to the architrave or plaster wall with sufficient room for 89mm slats to rotate.
  • The L Frame can be mounted directly over the architrave, flush with the outside edges or to the plaster, flush with the opening edge

Moulded (shaped) Architraves - The L Frame has a base size of 42mm.  You will require a flat surface of at least 20mm on the outside edge of the architrave on which to mount the frame.

Central Dividing Rail

All drops that exceed 1800mm will require each panel of shutters to have a central dividing rail.  This is an option on drops under 1800mm

The central dividing rail allows the shutter to operate the top and bottom independently.  It also gives the shutter more strength on longer drops.

When ordering your shutter, you will have the option of having a Central Dividing Rail Height, or a Customised Dividing Rail H

Central Dividing Rail - The factory will manufacture the shutter and place the dividing rail at the central height to the drop.  This will be approximate and may not be dead-centre, due to the equation of drop height x amount of slats.

Customised Dividing Rail - If you would like to cover your horizontal window frame mullion with a dividing rail, and have the shutter with less 'visual clutter', then we recommend that you enter the height you require for the dividing rail.  Measure from the bottom to the centre point of the mullion.  The dividing rail height may still vary slightly due to the equation of drop height x amount of slats.

Measuring Point for Customised Dividing Rail

Measure to the centre point of the horizontal mullion, from either the bottom of the architrave or the base of the recess, depending on the type of mount you require.

L Frame & Z Frame Templates

We make it even easier for you to measure and understand where your shutter frame will sit on your window. When ordering a sample pack for the colour selection, we include a Perspex Template of both the 'L Frame' and the 'Z Frame', so you can view the size and see how it will fit on your window or architrave, in your own home.

Sample Shutter

We go one step further than any of our competitors, and offer you an actual sample of a shutter for a low price of $25.00.

This allows you to see how easily the frame goes together, and where the shutter will fit onto your frame, or inside the window.

It also allows you to see the high quality of Blinds Online's Premium Shutters, and exactly what you will receive with your order.  We can't make it any easier than that.

Sample shutters can be purchased on the product page, above the shutter colours.

How to Measure for a Wall Mounted Custom Made Awning

  • Width: Measure the opening between bricks. Measure in 3 places - Top, Middle and Bottom. Use the smallest of the 3 measurements.
Add a minimum of 100mm to each side, to your opening measurement. This will then allow the awning to go past the opening to give you the best coverage, for light control and privacy.

  • Drop: Measure the drop from the top of opening to the bottom sill or opening. As you need to install the awning above the window, add at least 150mm-200mm to your drop measurement.

How to Measure for a Ready Made Awning

  • Width: Measure the opening size. Select the Awning size that is slightly bigger than your opening. Allow for at least 100mm extra each side.

  • Drop: Measure the drop from the top of the opening to where you want the awning to finish. Make sure your drop is less than 2350mm, as our ready-made length drops are 2400.
